The building started out as a private dwelling in 1604, the first known owner was Mrs Musgrove in 1704. In about 1810 parts of the premises were used as a beer house known as The White Horse. In 1848 Joseph Pursey licenced the property fully and renamed it The Lamb Tavern. Then with the arrival of the railway in 1862 the Hotel was renamed The Railway Hotel, this lasted up until 1984 when the Hotel was renamed The Foresters Arms after a local forester and timber merchant called John Bucknall.
